What Did Abraham Tithe?

Genesis 14:16 And he brought back all the goods, and also brought again his brother Lot, and his goods, and the women also, and the people.

Notice two things in this verse that many overlook, or their pastors don’t want them to see.

1. The goods that Abraham brought back belonged to Sodom and to Lot.
2. The goods that Abraham brought back DID NOT belong to Abraham.

Now notice…

Genesis 14:20 And blessed be the most high God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand. And he gave him tithes of all.

“and he gave him tithes of all.”

“Tithes of all?” What does that mean, “tithes of all”? All the goods that Abraham brought back in verse 16…not his own property, but the property of Sodom and of Lot. Abraham tithed the property of other people’s wealth…not his own wealth.

Abraham confirms that it was not his wealth in verses 21-24, where we read…

“And the king of Sodom said unto Abram, Give me the persons, and take the goods to thyself. And Abram said to the king of Sodom, I have lift up mine hand unto the LORD, the most high God, the possessor of heaven and earth, That I will not take from a thread even to a shoelatchet, and that I will not take any thing that is thine, lest thou shouldest say, I have made Abram rich: Save only that which the young men have eaten, and the portion of the men which went with me, Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre; let them take their portion.”

Abraham was returning the goods that belonged to Sodom (after he had given the customary tenth to Melchizedek) and Bera wanted to reward him by giving him the goods that he had recovered. But Abraham would have none of that. He told Bera that he had promised God that he would not take ANY of the spoils to himself (as his own property) lest he give Bera occasion to say he had made Abraham rich.

The text of Genesis 14:16-24 PROVES beyond a shadow of doubt that what Abraham gave as tithes that day was from the property of others…not from his own property.

And, if that isn’t enough, we have the text of Hebrews 7:4 that tells us what it was that Abraham tithed that day…

Hebrews 7:4 Now consider how great this man (Melchizedek/Melchisedec) was, unto whom even the patriarch Abraham gave the tenth of the spoils.

The tithe Abraham gave to Melchizedek/Melchisedec was from the goods/spoils (properties of Sodom and Lot) that Abraham had recovered after killing the wicked kings and rescuing the hostages.
