Nehemiah 10:29 They clave to their brethren, their nobles, and entered into a curse, and into an oath, to walk in God’s law, which was given by Moses the servant of God, and to observe and do all the commandments of the LORD our Lord, and his judgments and his statutes;

Nehemiah 10:37-38 And that we should bring the firstfruits of our dough, and our offerings, and the fruit of all manner of trees, of wine and of oil, unto the priests, to the chambers of the house of our God; and the tithes of our ground unto the Levites, that the same Levites might have the tithes in all the cities of our tillage. And the priest the son of Aaron shall be with the Levites, when the Levites take tithes: and the Levites shall bring up the tithe of the tithes unto the house of our God, to the chambers, into the treasure house.

Some key truths in Nehemiah 10…

1. They took an oath to return to God’s Law. (v.29)
2. They said they would take their firstfruits to the House of God in Jerusalem. (v.37)
3. They said they would keep the tithes in their farming communities. (v.37)
4. They said they would give the tithes to the Levites in their farming communities. (v.37)
5. They said an Aaronic Priest shall be present when the Levites receive the tithes from the congregation. (v.38)
6. They said the Levite is to take a tithe of the tithes to the House of God. (v.38)

They were returning to the Law, but they were not tithing to the House of God. Instead, they were keeping the tithe in their farming communities for the Levites to collect there. This is in keeping with Numbers 18:21-28, where we see the tithe is to be given to the Levites, but the children of Israel are not to approach the Tabernacle.

This tells us that God never commanded the children of Israel to tithe to the House of God. That command for the congregation to tithe to the House of God is man-made and not God -ordained. God’s divine order for tithing was

a) tithe to Levites in farming communities.
b) Levites take a tithe of the tithe to the House of God.

There is not a single time in the entire Bible where God told the congregation to tithe to the House of God. Tithing to the House of God was strictly to be done by the Ministerial Staff of the House of God.
