They Took Their Tithe to Jerusalem

The more I read the word of God, the more light God shines through it. As I was reading Deuteronomy 12:10-11 this morning, I realized something that so many people overlook today, and I myself had overlooked.

The children of Israel were to travel to Jerusalem with their tithe.

Deuteronomy 12:1 These are the statutes and judgments, which ye shall observe to do in the land, which the LORD God of thy fathers giveth thee to possess it, all the days that ye live upon the earth.

Deuteronomy 12:10 But when ye go over Jordan, and dwell in the land which the LORD your God giveth you to inherit, and when he giveth you rest from all your enemies round about, so that ye dwell in safety;
Deuteronomy 12:11 Then there shall be a place which the LORD your God shall choose to cause his name to dwell there; thither shall ye bring all that I command you; your burnt offerings, and your sacrifices, your tithes, and the heave offering of your hand, and all your choice vows which ye vow unto the LORD:

2 Chronicles 6:5 Since the day that I brought forth my people out of the land of Egypt I chose no city among all the tribes of Israel to build an house in, that my name might be there; neither chose I any man to be a ruler over my people Israel:
2 Chronicles 6:6 But I have chosen Jerusalem, that my name might be there; and have chosen David to be over my people Israel.

God chose the city of Jerusalem for the children of Israel to take their tithe.

Yes, I know..I’ve shared these passages before. However, I had previously used Nehemiah 10:37-38 to say that the congregation aka the children of Israel were to keep the tithe in the farming communities scattered throughout Canaan for the Levites to collect there.

I was wrong.

If they kept the tithe in the farming communities, they would have transgressed the command that they were to take the tithe to Jerusalem. So, they did not keep the Levitc tithe in their cities for the Levite to collect there…they took it to Jerusaelm.

Now, Nehemiah 10:37-38 makes it clear that they did not take the tithe to the House of God, when it says,

Nehemiah 10:37 And that we should bring the firstfruits of our dough, and our offerings, and the fruit of all manner of trees, of wine and of oil, unto the priests, to the chambers of the house of our God; and the tithes of our ground unto the Levites, that the same Levites might have the tithes in all the cities of our tillage.
Nehemiah 10:38 And the priest the son of Aaron shall be with the Levites, when the Levites take tithes: and the Levites shall bring up the tithe of the tithes unto the house of our God, to the chambers, into the treasure house.

It would be impossible for the Levites to take the tithe of the tithe up to the House of God if the tithe was already at the House of God. So, the tithe that was to go to the Levite went to Jerusalem, but did not go to the House of God.

There must have been a meeting place in Jerusalem other than the House of God, where the Levite collected the tithe and took a tithe of the tithe to the House of God.

Now, beside the tithe that was to go to the Levite each year, there was a second tithe that the children of Israel were to take to Jerusalem and eat before the LORD.

Deuteronomy 14:22 Thou shalt truly tithe all the increase of thy seed, that the field bringeth forth year by year.
Deuteronomy 14:23 And thou shalt eat before the LORD thy God, in the place which he shall choose to place his name there, the tithe of thy corn, of thy wine, and of thine oil, and the firstlings of thy herds and of thy flocks; that thou mayest learn to fear the LORD thy God always.
Deuteronomy 14:24 And if the way be too long for thee, so that thou art not able to carry it; or if the place be too far from thee, which the LORD thy God shall choose to set his name there, when the LORD thy God hath blessed thee:
Deuteronomy 14:25 Then shalt thou turn it into money, and bind up the money in thine hand, and shalt go unto the place which the LORD thy God shall choose:
Deuteronomy 14:26 And thou shalt bestow that money for whatsoever thy soul lusteth after, for oxen, or for sheep, or for wine, or for strong drink, or for whatsoever thy soul desireth: and thou shalt eat there before the LORD thy God, and thou shalt rejoice, thou, and thine household,

Then, every third year, instead of eating a tithe before the Lord in Jerusalem, they were to keep that tithe in their cities to give to the Levite, to the widow, to the fatherless, and to the stranger living in their cities.

Deuteronomy 26:12 When thou hast made an end of tithing all the tithes of thine increase the third year, which is the year of tithing, and hast given it unto the Levite, the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow, that they may eat within thy gates, and be filled;

They were still obligated to give the Levite his tithe even though the Levite shared a tithe every third year.

Numbers 18:21 And, behold, I have given the children of Levi all the tenth in Israel for an inheritance, for their service which they serve, even the service of the tabernacle of the congregation.
