Argument: “God said in Malachi 3:10 that we are to bring all the tithes into the storehouse. If you do not obey Malachi 3:10, you are guilty of robbing God.”

Rebuttal: In the Book of the Acts of the Apostles, we read that the men of Berea were deemed to be “more noble” than the men of Thessalonika because they searched the Scriptures daily to see if doctrines they were being taught were true. Let’s search out the truth of what it is that Malachi was saying, shall we?

1. Malachi 3:7 says that God was calling for a return to His ordinances. God’s tithe ordinance said that His tithe was to be agricultural. (Leviticus 27:30,32) Therefore, Malachi must have been speaking of agricultural tithes.

2. Malachi 3:7 says that God was calling for a return to His ordinances. God’s tithe ordinance said that the congregation could not approach the House of God with their tithes. (Numbers 18:21-22; reaffirmed in Nehemiah 10:29,37-38) Therefore, Malachi must not have been telling the congregation to bring tithes to the House of God.

3. Malachi 3:7 says that God was calling for a return to His ordinances. God’s tithe ordinance said that the place the congregation is to take their tithes is Jerusalem. (Deuteronomy 12:10-11;2 Chronicles 6:5-6) Therefore, Malachi was saying to bring tithes to the House of God in Jerusalem.

4. Malachi 3:7 says that God was calling for a return to His ordinances. God’s tithe ordinance said that only the Levitic tribe could take tithes to the House of God. (Numbers 18:24-28;Nehemiah 10:29,37-38) Therefore, Malachi was telling the Levitic tribe to bring the tithe of the tithes they received from the congregation into the storehouse.

Conclusion: It is wrong to use Malachi 3:10 as “proof-text”
a) to teach a monetary tithe requirement
b) to teach that the congregation is to bring tithes to the House of God
c) to teach that the congregation is to tithe in religious institutions outside of Jerusalem.
d) to teach anyone that is not a member of the Levitic tribe to bring tithes to the House of God.

2 Timothy 3:16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
2 Timothy 3:17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

2 Corinthians 4:1 Therefore seeing we have this ministry, as we have received mercy, we faint not;
2 Corinthians 4:2 But have renounced the hidden things of dishonesty, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully; but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man’s conscience in the sight of God.
