The Tithe of the Land

Leviticus 27:30 And all the tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land, or of the fruit of the tree, is the LORD’S: it is holy unto the LORD.

In many church assemblies around the world today, church leaders will use the text of Leviticus 27:30 as “proof-text” that Christians are required by God to tithe their money to the local church. However, rightly dividing the word of truth will reveal that Leviticus 27:30 is neither speaking of church assemblies around the world, nor of money.

The “land” referred to in Leviticus 27:30 is not speaking of the entire land mass of the planet Earth. Rather, it is speaking of the land of Canaan.

Notice who the command to tithe was given to in Leviticus 27…

Leviticus 27:34 These are the commandments, which the LORD commanded Moses for the children of Israel in mount Sinai.

Not once in the text of Leviticus 27:30-34 are Christians mentioned. The command to tithe was given solely to the biological bloodline descendants of the biblical patriarch Jacob. Now notice…

Deuteronomy 12:10 But when ye go over Jordan, and dwell in the land which the LORD your God giveth you to inherit, and when he giveth you rest from all your enemies round about, so that ye dwell in safety;
Deuteronomy 12:11 Then there shall be a place which the LORD your God shall choose to cause his name to dwell there; thither shall ye bring all that I command you; your burnt offerings, and your sacrifices, your tithes, and the heave offering of your hand, and all your choice vows which ye vow unto the LORD:

The place the children of Israel were to take their tithes was in the land of Israel…not in the wilderness that they were wandering in when God told them that they were to tithe. There was no place for them to tithe while in the wilderness. We know this because of further reading of the word of God…

2 Chronicles 6:5 Since the day that I brought forth my people out of the land of Egypt I chose no city among all the tribes of Israel to build an house in, that my name might be there; neither chose I any man to be a ruler over my people Israel:
2 Chronicles 6:6 But I have chosen Jerusalem, that my name might be there; and have chosen David to be over my people Israel.

God had not named a place for them to take their tithes while they were in the wilderness. He just told them that the tithes were His. They did not begin to tithe until four hundred fifty years AFTER they entered the land of Canaan to live there and they were not warring against their enemies.

The command to tithe was not a command that God expected people to be observed all over the world…

…it was a command that God expected of the owners of the land of Canaan. If you are not an owner of a portion of the land of Canaan, (known as Israel today) then the command to tithe does not apply to you at all.

And Leviticus 27:30-34 is speaking of agricultural tithes, not monetary tithes. It says that God’s holy tithe is to be “the seed of the land; (fruit, vegetables, and grain) the fruit of the tree; (fruits, wine, and oils) and every tenth animal to pass under the rod.” (cattle, sheep, and goats)
